Questions to Slacklining
What is Slacklining?
Slacklining is the balancing on a dynamic synthetic webbing, which is rigged between 2 fixed points. “Slack“ means loose, relaxed, … “Line“ can be translated as webbing, belt in our case, together, its Slackline and means relaxed webbing. Read here, if you want to learn more about the evolution of Slackline. A small guide for the first steps is written here.
What kind of benefit can give Slacklining to me?
Slacklining has many different aspects. First of all it just makes fun to play with gravity, balance and coordination on line. Slacklining is a wonderful opportunity for active recreation and meditation. Slacklining trains the body awareness and strengthens the muscles. And not to forget, Slacklining opens an exiting way to connect with other people.
What do i need for Slacklining?
Firstly 2 suitable fixed points, in usual 2 trees. Secondary a slackline, which is basically a 15m long piece of suitable webbing. Additionally a tightening device, metall connectors, tree slings and very important a proper tree protection. All this together is combined in our Starter Slackline-Set and the included manual guides through the first set-up. With this premises the slackline is ready to walk in under 15 minutes.
What about webbing width, length, height and tension?
In the beginning we recommend a webbing width of 35mm. Advanced and professionals are using mainly 25mm Slacklines. A length of 8-10m is ideal for the first sessions. The slackline is tightened in a height of approximately 50cm. Therefore the potential danger of injuries is kept low. The tension is right when you are not touching the ground if you stand midways on the slackline.
How much time will i need to walk my first Slackline?
Your progress will depend on your sportive biography, your persistance in learning and your risk assets. The body and the motor scills need time for this new state of equilibrium. The success is not arbitrarily. It is also a good strategy to focus on the state of balance, then rather push the walk through. The first success should come after 2-3 hours if you practice with commitment and related slackness. Normaly the first slackline can be sended after 2-4 sessions.
Barefoot or with shoes?
There are pros and cons for both styles. What temperature is outside? Is the ground dangerous? Am i doing tricks? You will have barefoot the maximum feel and sense. We can recommend barefoot slacklining in summertime. Shoes are advisable if you need some support for jumping of a higher longline or its even wintertime. It is also suitable to to wear shoes during hard trickline sessions. Best shoe type for slacklining are skate sneakers with a flat and grippy sole. There is more control if you remove the insole. The feet/shoes should be placed at a slight angle to the line. Thereby a tipping in the ankle is avoided.
What are the potential dangers and its prevention methods?
The anchor points for the slackline should be very stable (to withstand at least 1t) The setup should be done with high concentration. An additional security check is mandatory. The ground should be searched on sharp objects before starting to slackline. The hight of the slackline should be not higher then required. Practice a controlled fall technique to minimize the risk of injuries. Get the support of friends when you try new tricks and movements. Dynamic tricks are more dangerous. The slackline behaves like a trampoline without the possibility of soft landing.
What is possible beyond just walking a Slackline?
The Slackline is a sport activity tool with a high diversity of styles and philosophies. Wether tricks or yoga. Wether walking over water or at exposured heights, or going to the longest length. Everyone can find something for its own taste. A summation of the relevant varieties can be found here.
Questions regarding our products
What tightening system is suited for me?
The choice of a suitable tightening system depends on 3 main factors: cost, achievable span length, ease of use. As a beginner you will prefer a simple and cheap solution. The ratchet offers these properties and for this reason we have chosen them for our Starter Slackline-Set. The tightening with a webbing pulley system (Ellington) allows greater slackline length on a moderate cost level. On the other side the Ellington requires more pulling force and rigging experience. The Ellington principle is featured in our Cruiser Series. For the ambitious beginner and advanced slackliner this system is the best. Rope pulley systems like our Master Series are relative cost intensive. But this systems offer an unique ease of use. Large slackline length and high tensioning are the field of the Master Series. Just for those who want to know it!
Why i need a tree protection?
In short: Slacklining on trees - please only with tree protection! The protection is necessary to avoid damage to the trees (bark abrasion, pressure damage in the cambium) and as well as a political instrument to a sustainable future for our sport without restrictions in the public parks. We at Landcruising have recognized this concern early on: our first product back in 2008 was the tree protector TreePlus.
Shackles or carabiners, industrial vs. climbing equipment?
Shackles and robust industrial equipment have substantially prevailed within the sport of slackline. Originnally slacklining developed from the climbing sports. Thereby it was logically to use biners and other climbing equipment for the tightening of slacklines. There are two important statements to this issue: climbing which was used in slackline setups should not be used for climbing activities anymore. Secondary climbing equipment was developed for the use with round rope and short maximum shock loads. The mechanical strength rating for the climbing equipment is not valid with the usage of flat webbing. If you want to go safe, just use proper industrial rigging equipment.
Breaking loads, forces in slacklines, safety margins and backups?
Breaking loads define the limit where the part failure can start. Most of these loads are examanined under ideal conditions. In reality the failure loads can be notably lower. For our material and system definition we use the 1/4 rule. This means that the maximum load of each component don´t exceed 25% of their given breaking load. In normal critcal forces to the slackline can be excluded. High jumps on hard tightened lines are almost more on the limit, but not beyond. In the field of longlining and highlining the knowledge of the safety margins and the consequences of equipment failure is vital. For this reasons, highlining and longlining is adressed to the experienced and technical versatile slackliner only.
For whom is our slacklineset Starter suited?
Our Starter slacklinerset is suited to beginners, has a high quality and is very robust. Its simplicity and elegance is convincing. Even people with less power are able to build up a slackline without problems. The 35mm webbing provides ideal support for the first steps and due to its nice dynamic behaviour it is also interesting for advanced slackliners. The Starter is ideal as jump-, fun- and trickline too.
Can i tighten the Starter slacklineset longer than 16m?
The ratchet of the starterset has a limited coil capacity. in addition, the length of the ratchet lever limits the achivable maximum pretension of the slackline. Length and tension are in mutal relation. If the slackline is longer than 16m the hight would be exceed the waist level (more danger and more difficulty in walking behaviour). Up to a length of 25m an additional ratchet on the other side can be used. If the slackline is longer than 25m another tightening system should be used.
Can i order the Starter slacklineset with a 25mm width slackline?
Our Starter slacklineset was designed for a 35mm wide slackline. The included ratchet has exactly the same width and fits perfectly. A 25mm wide webbing tends to sidward displacement durinng tightening. The ratchet moves wrong and the webbing is damaged. This damage can be avoided by careful winding and readjustment of the webbing in the ratchet. However this is not easy anymore. The use of spacers in this ratchet isn´t technically appropriate. The 7,5mm wide discs aren´t stable enough (due to the mountablity they are cutted). We haven´t planned the usage of a 50mm wide ratchet with stable spacers, since we want to limit the ratchets to our Starter with 35mm webbing. For 25mm slacklines we recommend the Ellington principle.
Up to what length can i tighten a slackline by myself?
The achievable length depends on several factors: muscle strength, pulling technique, tightening system and tension in the slackline. With regard to the physical strength and the pull technique, we define a comfort value (young unexperienced boy) and an upper limit value (strong experienced man). Most of the slackliners are interspersed within. Ratchet (our 35mm ratchet) 10mm (comf.) to 20m (extr.). Ellington with multiplier and handfriend 15m (comf.) to 40m (extr.). Rope pulley (5:1 base) with multiplier 35m (comf.) to 120m (extr.). These values are approximate benchmarks. By using all technical weapons, it is possible to tighten beyond 200m with only one person.
For whom is the Landcruising Master Series?
The Master Series is the product of our experience and passion for slacklining. For slacklines longer than 30m we highly recommend the Master Series. All our loglines and highlines of the recent years have been tightened with the principle of the Master Series. These slackline systems are aimed for ambitious slackliners, who are always searching for a new challennge..
What is the difference of our White Magic compared to other webbings?
With our White Magic we followed the principle of "less is more". No colouring, no prints - purity for pure balance. The White Magic is the lightest webbing of its class (>30kN webbing). The strength values and properties are well balanced. The strain is not too big (this allows the rigging of longer lines) and the stiffness is moderate. In summation the White Magic has a very soft, light and good-natured behaviour, especially for longer slacklines. Manx top slackliners worldwide usinng this webbing for good reasons. The current longline world record (217m) was achieved with White Magic.
What means modularity and interchangebility of our components?
For example, we are using in our Starter slacklineset components which can be used for other slackline setups too (shackles, treeslings, treeprotection). Modularity means that worn parts are easily replacable and can be purchased for a reasonable price at our shop. Upgrading is always possible too. There aren´t any resctrictions to the flexibilty of your ideas.
What is the difference between our tree protectors TreePlus and TreeBuddies?
The TreePlus is our flagship with outstanding comfort and practical features. For our Starter slacklineset we have omitted some details and adapted the length to our tree slings - the TreeBuddies were born.
